O Cerejal (The Cherry Orchard)

“My play premiered yesterday, and I’m not in a very good mood.” So writes Chekhov in a letter dated January 1904, following the premiere of what would be his last play, The Cherry Orchard. Although Stanisklavski directed it as a tragedy, Chekhov viewed his play primarily as a comedy. For 112 years, the tragic or comedic nature of the text has divided generations of critics and artists. Tg STAN engages in the controversy with ten actors making this much-debated text their own. If The Seagull is, for many, the perfect play, The Cherry Orchard is the perfect “anti-play.” The present is almost non-existent, smothered between a nostalgic, romantic predilection for the past and a fragile aspiration after an uncertain future.
